The leaves are falling as winter approaches. It's been a busy summer for me; I've worked almost every day. I really want to get out of Minnesota for good this winter. In the past I've blogged about where precisely I might want to move to and I'm still not certain. Seattle and Kansas City are still high up on the list. My friend thinks I should move to KC. I just want a place where I can remain happily employed and live a reasonable life.
Ubi panis ibi patria.
Where in the United States would you move to if you had the choice?
As you’ve probably heard, famous movie director Roman
Polanski was recently arrested in Switzerland
and is being held pending extradition to California
on rape charges. In 1977 he doped a 13 year old girl with Quaaludes and
alcohol and then raped her as she pleaded for him to stop. He subsequently fled
to Europe where he has been evading U.S. authorities while continuing
to direct movies.
Following his recent arrest, numerous persons (including the
woman he raped) as well as several governments have stated that they feel the
charges against him should be dropped. Their reasoning is that the crime, heinous
though it was, took place so long ago and Polanski is after all such a talented
man that maybe the whole thing should simply be forgotten at this point.
One of the numerous celebrities who has come out in his
defense is actress Whoopi Goldberg. Defending her position she was recently
quoted as saying “I know it wasn’t rape-rape. I think it was something else,
but I don’t believe it was rape-rape.”
Should the crime of rape be punished more lightly if it
takes place in a social setting between people who know each other versus say
between strangers in some back alley?
